Artists

We have work permanently in stock, which can be viewed on request, by the following artists:

G. D Aked

G.D. AKED was a contemporary and friend of Julian Trevelyan and Mary Fedden, but his artistic career took him in very different directions from theirs. He led a nomadic life in the Far East and North Africa and spent much time in Barbados - drawing and painting all the time. His styles range intriguingly from Surrealist to straight figurative, from abstract to Neo-Romantic. He disliked galleries and so exhibited little during his lifetime. This gallery had a solo exhibition of his work in 1991 and has held stock of it ever since. In June 2003 his work was featured in the ‘British Art of the 40s and 50s’ held here.

Deirdre Borlase

Painter and printmaker of domestic scenes. Watercolours and etchings.

Andy English

East Anglian wood engraver (member of Society of Wood Engravers, Wood-Engravers Network USA). Work mainly independent limited-edition prints (each one an original artist's print numbered and signed) or illustrations. Also bookplates. Themes: childhood, gardens, the Fens, relationship between people and rural environment.

Marie Hartley

Marie Hartley, whose books with Ella Pontefract and Joan Ingilby on the Yorkshire Dales set a new standard of books about the region, is an accomplished wood engraver. Her evocative prints, executed and printed by herself, are many of them still available from the gallery. A book of her wood engravings is also available.

Swietlan Kraczyna

Although American by upbringing, Italy has been his adopted country for more than 30 years. He lives just outside Florence, in Ghirlandaio’s former house and it is there that he has his print studio. He is a printmaker of international distinction, teaching his sophisticated techniques of colour etching at his summer school in Barga and also in Czechoslovakia and in the USA. This gallery holds a range of his work, from the earlier mythology-based Icarus prints to work based on a musical sequence from Stravinsky and on Chinese philosophical signs, to scenes of the Tuscan landscape at different seasons round his house.

Jean Lodge

Characteristics of the American printmaker (now based in Paris and Oxford) Jean Lodge’s work are constant innovation, an extraordinary mastery of mixed techniques and a fascination with the human face. She was for 17 years Head of Printmaking at the Ruskin in Oxford, and has spent time in Japan with hand papermakers and printmakers. Now she concentrates on her own work, while giving workshops in the USA, in her Paris studio and on behalf of the gallery at our northern outpost at Castle Farm in Arkengarthdale.

Carlo Mattioli
